MW4 DMZ Solo Guide: Squad Fill, Loadout & Extraction
Play DMZ alone by turning Squad Fill off. Prepare a low-cost kit, choose one objective, understand revival Traits and extract without confusing solo play with a PvE-only lobby.

Can you play MW4 DMZ solo?
Yes. Activision explicitly supports playing DMZ alone and lets you turn Squad Fill off before deploying. You still enter the online PvPvE experience, with hostile AI and rival Operators. Turning off allied-player fill is not a private or PvE-only lobby switch, and it does not establish a separate solos-only opponent pool.
This October 24 guide combines official menu and system information with labeled editorial preparation advice. The cover is the official Ready Up menu: the bottom-left Squad Fill toggle is shown on. For a solo run, switch it off. Its advanced equipment is illustrative, not a starter-kit recommendation or a site-run playtest. For the wider mode, see DMZ basics.
Turn Squad Fill off before deployment
- At the FOB, confirm the Active Duty Operator you intend to use. If the goal is a solo run, make sure your current party contains only you; disabling fill does not mean dismissing existing friends.
- Open Deploy and choose Story Missions, Dynamic Operations or Free Roam. Read the chosen briefing or purpose.
- For Dynamic Operations or Free Roam, choose an available infil method. The official Ground option is free and begins at a random location; it is not a selectable safe spawn.
- In Ready Up, check your gear and set Squad Fill to off. Activision describes fill-on as adding two allied players.
- Recheck the squad and equipment before confirming deployment. The English labels above follow the official guide; localized game-menu wording can differ.
Choosing Story Missions does not turn DMZ into the separate offline campaign. If a mode is missing entirely, use known launch issues rather than treating it as a solo setting.
Prepare a low-cost first run
Wide tables can be scrolled sideways.
| Before infil | Official basis | Our solo preparation advice |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Ready Up offers a Free Loadout | Use it if replacing a bought kit would drain your funds |
| Armor and storage | Plate Carrier and Backpack are recommended loadout items | Carry a kit you can afford to lose and leave room for your objective item |
| Weapon | Bring a usable weapon; extracted Weapon Manuals unlock repeat purchasing | Prefer a familiar gun over an expensive untested build |
| Medical item | The official list includes a Medkit for wounds | Check that you packed it; do not treat every healing item as self-revival |
| Objective | Orders and deployment choices define the task | Pick one nearby task rather than a cross-map shopping list |
Extracting with a free kit lets you keep its items. For crafting goals, choose a target in the printer planner before deployment, then verify what needs extraction. The planner tracks a browser inventory, not your live game stash.
Keep the route short and control escalation
Our recommended first loop is one manageable objective, then extraction. This is risk-management advice, not a tested fastest-money route. Compare the actual infil position with the Hajin POIs and threats; a low threat label does not guarantee an empty area or predictable player traffic.
The official Hajin guide says sustained aggression escalates the response and that stealth, cover, losing enemy sightlines and disengaging can calm it. Avoid turning an optional fight into the main objective when alone. Reassess after collecting the item you came for. UAV Towers and Lieutenant Hunt towers are different objectives; activating one should be a deliberate detour.
Revival Traits do different things
Wide tables can be scrolled sideways.
| Trait example | Official function | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| Possum | One self-revival from death into Last Stand per match, restoring health | Unlimited revives or a guaranteed successful extraction |
| Free Revive | Automatically repairs the first Wound | A general promise to resurrect after death |
| Die Hard | Approaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it automatically and grants infinite bleed-out time while in Last Stand | Immunity to attacks or a way to summon extraction from anywhere |
These are Trait examples, not equipment every new Operator starts with. The Trait system has progression and locked choices; check what your current Operator actually owns before planning around a revival. The October 23 notes correct Numb the Pain descriptions and other DMZ issues; they do not establish an invulnerable solo build.
Extract without assuming the site is safe
Use the active green-smoke extraction marker, call the extraction helicopter and hold until you can board. Officially, exfil locations are selected from a pool; the effect and flares can draw rival squads. Check the current map rather than relying on a permanently safe extraction coordinate.
As editorial advice, identify cover and a retreat option before committing, then stop looting when the immediate priority is boarding. Carrying the item is not the same as extracting it. Check your Order's completion wording and the result screen afterward. No particular item, route or Trait guarantees survival.
If the solo run fails
An eliminated Operator becomes MIA and cannot deploy until recovered. The official Operators station lets you pay DMZ Cash to recover them with Traits retained, but without their gear; the cost scales with Trait Points. Dismissing them and starting fresh is a different choice, so read the confirmation before using it.
The official FOB guide says DMZ XP earned in the deployment still contributes even if you fail to exfil. That is not a guarantee that backpack items or an extraction-required Order are retained. Reequip, lower the next run's replacement cost and consider Squad Fill on if you would rather have allies. The FOB guide explains the progression context.
For published opinions before you commit, read the DMZ review roundup. A positive event-based impression does not establish that public solo runs are easy.
